Medical Laboratory Testing in Ontario

  • Laboratory tests are the most commonly used diagnostic tool by physicians: eight million Ontarians go to community medical labs each year
  • Laboratory tests are relied on to inform more than 80 per cent of medical decisions
  • 60 per cent of all medical test by volume are done in the community; the rest are completed in hospitals and by public health officials
  • Ontario pays $700 million per year for medical testing in the community
  • Ontario is the only province not to permit hospitals to conduct laboratory tests for outpatients, posing a significant challenge to many smaller and rural communities underserved by Ontario’s current lab providers
  • Reduced access to laboratory testing sites and timely delivery of quality service has been identified as problematic by doctors, patients, service providers and called out in two Auditor General reports
